TennisSection previews the 2023 Argentina Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Laslo Djere in the second round on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.

Carlos Alcaraz’s much-anticipated return to action takes center stage at the Argentina Open. The top seed will face Serbian’s Laslo Djere in what should be a tricky opener for the 2022 US Open champion. Will Alcaraz prevail?
Carlos Alcaraz has been out of action for the best part of three months. First, it was an internal oblique muscle tear that forced him to shut down his season after the Paris Masters, missing out on competing at the ATP Finals in Turin. Then he injured his leg during pre-season and had to withdraw from the Australian Open. Much to the disappointment of his fans and tennis fraternity, Alcaraz also surrendered his No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic. The young Spaniard will now come up against Laslo Djere at the Argentina Open in his first match of the season.

Laslo Djere, meanwhile, played in the first round here at the Argentina Open, beating Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Djere is a wily competitor on clay and dominated Fognini from start to finish, converting three of his four break points and winning 76% first-serve points. He also saved an impressive six of seven break points he faced in the match to earn a date against the top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz and Laslo Djere have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s match at the Argentina Open will be their first official meeting. It will be fascinating to watch Alcaraz get into the thick of things in 2023. He’s been solely missed on the ATP Tour, and he’s been putting a shift in his preparation for his first tournament of the season. The build-up is worth the hype and we expect the Spaniard to face very little resistance in his march to the quarterfinal.
