We have a fascinating battle here between 27th seed Yoshihito Nishioka and the unseeded J.J. Wolf. The American is steadily improving on clay even though it is his weakest surface. Wolf previously played at the French Open three years ago losing in the first round of qualifying. He hasn’t played the clay slam since. In fact, this year’s Australian Open was the first Major he’s played outside the US Open. And he did pretty well Down Under making the second week there playing lighting quick tennis. The conditions in Paris won’t allow him to do that, but to reiterate my point, he’s learning and improving on red clay, finding more ways to win points and his rally tolerance has gotten better with each tournament he’s played on the European clay. Nishioka has far more experience and ability to get results on the clay, but he’s been a massive letdown since his Australian Open fourth-round run. This should be a nip and tuck and we like Wolf’s odds.
