TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Benoit Paire in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, August 20th, 2021.
Will Benoit Paire put on another great performance as he is finally getting some big wins and form after a tough year in 2021 where he was losing consistently? Will Andrey Rublev build on his tough match against Gael Monfils in the Round of 16? Both of them have the talent to win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Who will it be?
Benoit Paire put on a great performance against the in form John Isner, beating the Toronto Open Semi-Finalist in 3 sets 7-6/6-7/6-1. Benoit was great on his first serve, but shocking on his second serve. However, he was helped by the fact that he was able to hit some amazing passing shots when needed against Isner to get the breaks. Benoit Paire will be very happy with this win because John is a great player and this is one of his biggest wins in a year or so. However, Benoit will need to be at his best on both his serve and his return game now that he meets the determined and powerful Andrey Rublev here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Andrey Rublev had to fight through an extremely tight and entertaining match against Gael Monfils in the Round of 16, beating the Frenchman in straight sets 7-6/7-6. The first set was tight but Rublev was definitely in control for the majority of the points so it felt as business as usual. However, the second set was a rollercoaster, with Monfils having stomach issues, but Rublev then lost his focus and handed Monfils a break twice! Rublev broke back twice and stopped Monfils from serving for the set, and came through a great tiebreak. This was a good match because Monfils is always unpredictable, so if he can come through this tough match against this Frenchman at the 2021 Cincinnati Open, he will feel some confidence now that he meets another similar Frenchman in Benoit Paire.
Andrey Rublev and Benoit Paire have met 1 time before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 1-0. They met in a Challenger Tour tournament in 2016 so it does not really count. When looking at both their matches in the Round of 16, sure Paire beat Isner, and Isner had beaten Rublev last week. However, Isner was nowhere near the level he was last week as we could see him struggling physically from the start of the match. Benoit had some service games handed to him, but against Rublev this won’t happen, and Benoit will end up paying for all of his double faults. I might expect some entertaining moments where the crowd gets going, but Andrey should have a straightforward path to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
