Elina Svitolina had to fight back from a set down against the in form Ajla Tomljanovic, beating the Australian in 3 sets 4-6/6-3/6-4. Elina Svitolina will be able to gain some confidence from this win and she will look at it positively, but she is still not where she needs to be to be competitive for one of the medals here in Tokyo. Elina knows that Ajla was in form and she beat her, but she will also know that she meets a much tougher opponent in Maria Sakkari now and she cannot afford to go a set down here.
Maria Sakkari dominated her second round match against the Serb, Nina Sotjanovic, beating her in straight sets 6-1/6-2. Maria Sakkari is in dominant form here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and she will know that she can definitely compete for one of the three medals as she has been in great form in 2021. Maria is at her best on hard courts because she is a power hitter and she can get the ball moving through the court at incredible speeds, taking time away from her opponents. Maria Sakkari will have to be at her best as she now meets an experienced opponent in Elina Svitolina.
Elina Svitolina and Maria Sakkari have met 3 times before, with Maria Sakkari leading the head to head 2-1. Their last 2 meetings were won by Maria Sakkari, and at the time, Sakkari was nowhere near the level she is currently at. Elina Svitolina did beat the in form Ajla Tomljanovic, but she struggled throughout the match. Maria is much less forgiving and once she is in front, she is hard to break down. Svitolina has not shown me enough to believe in her at the moment. I see Maria Sakkari making her way to the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
