Anhelina Kalinina nearly came full circle at the Italian Open over a week ago. Kalinina reached the biggest final of her career in Rome but ended up losing the title match after retiring while trailing 6-4, 1-0 to Elena Rybakina. Kalinina was a spent force by the time she got into the championship match after playing three energy-sapping three-setters including the longest WTA match of the season in beating Beatriz Haddad Maia. The fortnight in Rome was a massive upturn in her form after losing four straight matches prior to the tournament and possessing a 10-10 win-loss record. She’ll have a tricky opening match to navigate against the French World No. 79 Diane Parry who hoisted her second WTA 125K title in Paris following the withdrawal of Caty McNally in the championship match. It was an excellent week for the 20-year-old who tallied wins over the likes of Linda Noskova and Varvara Gracheva in her run to the final. Parry is unfazed by the big stage. Last year she announced herself with a rousing cameo in the first round of the French Open when she defeated then-reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova. She’s an exciting prospect and while she doesn’t have the firepower to tear apart Kalinina, she can mix it up with her sizzling one-hander which she can use to neutralize points and catch her opponent off guard. I’m not convinced Kalinina can get this done in straights which is why we’ll take the set handicap on the Frenchwoman.
