TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open first-round match featuring Jule Niemeier vs. Xinyu Wang on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.
Jule Niemeier vs. Xinyu Wang Preview
Will Jule Niemeier find form at the Madrid Open? The German big hitter faces China’s World No. 60 seeking just her third Tour-level win.
Jule Niemeier has endured a disastrous 2023 season with just two wins on the WTA Tour all year. But I fully expect Niemeier to hit the ground running this clay swing beginning with the Madrid Open. Her tennis in the past two weeks should feel her with optimism. She won a match in singles at the Billie Jean King Cup, beating top-20 player Beatriz Haddad Maia. And a week later, Niemeier gave Elena Rybakina a tough time in a close two-set defeat.
Xinyu Wang hasn’t played on clay this season just yet. Although she is the higher-ranked player in this matchup, clay is definitely not her favorite surface. So if Jule Niemeier was looking for a rare WTA win, this is should a comfortable day at the office for the German. Let’s see if Wang can trouble Niemeier and extend her woes.
Jule Niemeier vs. Xinyu Wang Prediction and Pick
Jule Niemeier and Xinyu Wang have not played each other on the WTA Tour, with this first-round match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. It’s been a dismal campaign for the German, but expect her to go full throttle at this year’s clay swing. She’s the superior player on this surface and in recent weeks, Niemeier has chosen placement over power in getting her game firing on all cylinders. Expect the German to overwhelm Wang.
Free Tennis Prediction and Pick: Jule Niemeier in 2 sets (+133)
