TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Fabio Fognini takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round of 64 on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.
Will Fabio Fognini move on? Will Jan-Lennard Struff pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup and we could be in for a thriller. Who will move onto the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Fabio Fognini hasn’t been playing great tennis, having been upset by Nakashima in the first round of San Diego. Still, he showed that part of his level is alive, and I feel like this is a good test for him to see if he can still get through. He still is the favorite, and it will most certainly be interesting to see if Fognini can take out Jan-Lennard Struff with that very aggressive and clean tennis. It’s a good matchup, as Struff isn’t too mobile of a player, so Fognini can use his incredible accuracy and timing to run Struff around the court and pick off the points that way. Let’s see if he can bring that top level that we know he has in him to take out Struff and progress to the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Jan-Lennard Struff got a solid win, showing that he’s in form and is ready to take on Fabio Fognini. He most certainly has a shot to pull off the upset, as he’s done it before with big players at the big tournaments, most notably against Andrey Rublev at the French Open this year. However, he often relies too much on his serve, and isn’t able to consistently stay in rallies, making his results also rather widespread. This will make it a hard match for Struff, as Fognini is able to hit with pinpoint accuracy and run his opponent around the court quite easily, making him one of the most dangerous opponents for himself. Let’s see if he’ll be able to take advantage of Fogninis’s lower level and pull off the upset here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Fabio Fognini and Jan-Lennard Struff have played three times before, with Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 2-1. They’ve met 3 times, twice on clay and most notably this year on the hard courts of the Americas in Toronto. Fognini dropped the first set in a close tiebreaker, then storming on to easily grab the next 2 sets. Fognini doesn’t have that high level anymore, and Struff did just win his first match in straights, however, I still feel like Fognini isn’t playing too bad, mostly he is having some mental issues on the court, so I feel like due to the fact that he will be able to outplay Struff simply by the way they play, I think that he’ll edge it out in a tough one to move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
