TennisSection previews Wimbledon 2022 as Novak Djokovic takes on Tim van Rijthoven in the fourth round on Sunday, July 3rd, 2022.
Will Tim van Rijthoven continue his unbeaten streak since he first made his ATP Tour debut a few weeks ago at the Libema Open? Will Novak Djokovic continue to dominate opponents here at Wimbledon as he aims to keep himself fresh for tougher matches later on in his title defence? Both players are in great form coming into this match. However, only one will be a quarter-finalist this year at Wimbledon. Who will it be?
Tim van Rijthoven is in superb form, being 8-0 since he made his debut on the ATP Tour, having beaten big names already in his career, such as Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Daniil Medvedev. Here at Wimbledon, he has not had the same level of competition so far, but he did put in amazing performances against Opelka and Basilashvili, two players not easy to play against on grass. Rijthoven will know that this is the biggest match of his career so far and he will be extremely excited to step on center court to take on the defending champion, Novak Djokovic. However, will he come out nervous and not be able to work around the pressure? Or will he come into this match feeling as if he is playing with the house’ money, therefore going for all of his shots?
Novak Djokovic has not blinked since he lost that set in the first round against Soonwoo Kwon, winning his last 8/8 sets which have seen him through to this fourth round encounter at Wimbledon. Djokovic has been defeating opponents comprehensively, and showing us why he is the Wimbledon champion for the last 3 editions of the championships. Novak Djokovic feels at home on grass and he seems very determined to make this his first slam of the year as he aims to set himself up optimally to tie Nadal by the end of the year. However, it is always hard coming up against a youngster who has nothing to lose and who has beaten two top 10 players in the last few weeks. But if there is anyone who knows how to put youngsters in their place in tennis, it is Novak Djokovic, so I am sure he is not too worried about Tim van Rijthoven.
This is going to be the first encounter between both players, with this being the biggest match of Rijthoven’s career. Novak has been in this situation before, young gun in form of his life aiming to come out here and take on the defending champion, so I am sure he will know how to adapt his game if things to get tense and close. This match is really all in Tim’s hands, he either comes out plays the best game of his life and perhaps keeps it close in a couple sets, or he comes out, feels enourmous pressure, and crumbles. One thing is for sure, no matter how he comes out, he will lose comprehensively to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. He has not faced opponents of this caliber, even through he has beaten Medvedev (who was sub-par in their match). I think Tim’s unbeaten run comes to an end as Novak continues to dominate at Wimbledon.
