TennisSection previews the 2022 Qatar Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022.
Karen Khachanov picked up just his second win of his career at the Qatar Open when he beat Mackenzie McDonald. And will face another sterner test against one of the ATP Tour’s most consistent performers in 2022 in Emil Ruusuvuori. Will the Russian come unstuck?
In his first visit to the Qatar Open since 2019, Karen Khachanov made sure it was a winning return. The fifth-seeded Russian played flawless tennis at times, using his powerful forehand to outmuscle McDonald in a tight first set which featured zero breaks of serve. Khachanov would dominate the tiebreak to take a one set lead. In the second set, the Russian dug himself out of a hole when he held serve from love 40 down. And McDonald was left to rue the missed chances of establishing a lead. Khachanov broke the American twice from that moment on and finished the match in Khachanov-style with a devastating forehand return.
Karen Khachanov’s next opponent will be the in-form Finn Emil Ruusuvuori. The man from Helsinki edged out former World No. 7 David Goffin in three sets to reach the second round of the Qatar Open. Ruusuvuori has been one of the most improved players on the men’s tour in 2022, compiling an impressive 8-3 record heading to Wednesday’s match. He reached his first ATP final at the Maharashtra Open in Pune at the start of February, losing to Joao Sousa.
Karen Khachanov leads Emil Ruusuvuori 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match was played on the hard courts of Indian Wells towards the end of last year. Khachanov ran out a straight-sets winner at the time. Both Khachanov and Ruusuvuori have started the year strongly. But it is the Russian power-hitter who has faced stiffer competition in the past month and a half. That doesn’t in any way take the gloss off Ruusuvuori’s achievements; however, it gives Khachanov an upper hand in this matchup at the Qatar Open.
