An interesting match lies ahead as ninth seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman will face unseeded Marton Fucsovics of Hungary for a spot in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Both men have very different game styles but will no doubt be highly motivated to play well here. Neither man has ever reached this stage in the competition before so one of them has an opportunity to go even further. Who will get the win and advance here?
Diego Schwartzman is currently ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the ninth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The diminutive Argentine typically struggles on this quicker surface due to his relatively weak serve and size, but he has been impressive so far this year, cruising past Benoit Paire in the First Round before overcoming Liam Broady in four. While he has played well so far, he is yet to face a big serving power player like his next opponent Marton Fucsovics. This is the type of player that will cause Schwartzman a heap of trouble on these quick grass courts and the Argentine will have to be at his very best to remain competitive here.
Marton Fucsovics is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked #48 in the ATP world rankings. The big Hungarian is an extremely talented player but struggles with consistency. It really is a mystery that he has never reached the Third Round at Wimbledon before as his game seems well suited to the surface. His powerful serve is a major weapon, and when he is fully focused he can compete with the very best. He has impressed here so far, defeating the talented Jannik Sinner in the First Round and then advanced to this stage when Jiri Vesely retired due to injury. While he enters this match against Diego Schwartzman as the underdog, if he is playing well he is more than capable of getting the win and should be able to overpower his opponent.
This is the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and Diego Schwartzman leads the head to head 1-0. They played two years ago at Roland Garros, with the Argentine winning a ferocious five setter. It is very difficult to predict this match, and I am going with the upset here. Marton Fucsovics has all the tools to do well here, and he seems fully focused. While Schwartzman is the better player, the Hungarian will be able to overpower him on this quick surface, and the Argentine won’t have time to get behind the ball and wind up his shots. I think it will go to four or five sets, but expect Fucsovics to win here, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships for the first time.
