TennisSection previews Wimbledon 2022 as Rafael Nadal meets Taylor Fritz in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday July 6th, 2022.
Can Rafael Nadal march on in his quest to extend his lead in the Grand Slam race over Novak Djokovic? The 22 time Grand Slam champion has been in great form this year and seems destined to meet his great rival in the Final here at Wimbledon 2022. Taylor Fritz is aiming to spoil the party and reach his first ever Grand Slam Semi-Final, can he cause the massive upset and get the win here?
Rafael Nadal is the second seed here at Wimbledon 2022 and is the world number four. The Spaniard has been on a tear this year, and is on track for the calendar year Grand Slam. While grass is his least favorite surface he is still a two-time champion here at Wimbledon, and with the non-participation of Daniil Medvedev and the withdrawal of Matteo Berrettini is one of the main favorite to win it all along with Novak Djokovic. After a shaky start here this week where he dropped sets to Francisco Cerundolo and Ricardas Berankis, the Spaniard has come into his own, dominating Botic Van de Zandschulp in the Round of 16. He started extremely well and only really faltered at the end, failing to close the match out while serving at 5-3 with a number of uncharacteristic errors. However, it was still a vast improvement from his early round matches and the rest of the draw much be starting to feel a bit worried. Nadal is moving very well and there are no signs of his foot acting up, and if this continues he will have a real chance to win the title.
Taylor Fritz is ranked 14th in the world and is the eleventh seed here at Wimbledon 2022. The American number one has had a very up and down year but has seemed to put it all together at the right time, winning the Eastbourne title the week before and looking good so far. As always he has been relying on his massive serve and forehand to get him through matches, and was in impressive form against Australian Jason Kubler, dropping just eight games en route to the victory. In fact, the American is yet to drop a set at the championships thus far and his confidence must be at an all time high. His next opponent needs no introduction, but if there was ever a time for Fritz to achieve his career-best showing at a Grand Slam with an upset win over Rafael Nadal it would be now.
This will be the third meeting between the two players with the head to head tied at 1-1. Rafael Nadal won their first meeting easily in 2020 but Taylor Fritz evened the score earlier this year in Indian Wells. I am expecting a tough battle here with the American potentially stealing a set in a breaker, but the smart play is to side with Nadal, likely in straight sets. Fritz certainly has the game to trouble the Spaniard but this is a Grand Slam Quarter-Final that we are talking about, and there is no-one more dangerous this late in a major than Nadal and his big rival Djokovic. It won’t be easy, but Nadal will win here, moving yet another step closer to a third slam for the year.
