TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open fourth-round match featuring Borna Coric vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
Borna Coric vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Preview
Borna Coric will face a red-hot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth round in front of a partisan Madrid crowd. Who will prevail?
Borna Coric has been uninspiring coming to the Madrid Open, but he looks to have turned a corner right from his second-round win over Hugo Gaston. He’s talked about getting into a rhythm and that’s exactly what he’s found in the Spanish capital, backing up that win with another one in the round of 32 where he defeated Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, meanwhile, edged out Holger Rune in a late-night epic. It was a high-tempered affair, but there was no love lost between the two players who played some great tennis in front of a partisan Madrid crowd. Davidovich Fokina certainly raised his level at the vital moments and fed on the energy generated by the home fans to come away with a 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 win.
Borna Coric vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Pick
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina leads Borna Coric 1-0 in their head-to-head, winning that match on the hard court in Indian Wells last year, which is very much Coric’s battleground. So the Spaniard is to be fancied to reach the last eight on home soil at the Madrid Open. Home advantage will likely be a crucial factor again. We saw just how significant it was in giving a new lease of life when it looked like Davidovich Fokkina threw his chance against Holger Rune. Coric has shown his steely side in getting to the second week, but I have to side with the home favorite here.
