TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, October 1st, 2021.
Will Aslan Karatsev move on? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a rematch of the 2021 Australian Open quarterfinal. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Aslan Karatsev got an absolutely incredible win over Hubert Hurkacz, rallying back from a set down to grab the next two sets 6-4 6-2. He served quite well, and played even better off the ground, striking winner after winner. After showing some inconsistencies since the first half of the year, Karatsev seems to be playing at a high level again, taking out one of the most in-form players on the ATP Tour. Since he was able to do that, I think he will fair quite well against Grigor Dimitrov, who has been struggling very hard since the start of the year. It’s also quite a good matchup for him, as he hits very hard and plays incredibly aggressive, and one of the things that Dimitrov has been struggling with the most this year is simply making a lot of balls in the court, so if Karatsev can hit some of those penetrating groundstrokes and throw Dimitrov off his rhythm, then he has a great shot at the semifinals here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Grigor Dimitrov got a great win to set up this meeting with Karatsev, taking on Holmgren after the withdrawal of FAA. He certainly lucked out to an extent, as Holmgren is very inexperienced and having to take on a top 30 player at the last minute was a tough task for sure. Dimitrov will have to change the pace constantly, slicing often and hoping Karatsev doesn’t jump on it. If he’s lucky, Karatsev won’t serve at his best and he can block a lot of those back, of course, Karatsev will still try to play aggressive no matter what, and with the level he showed against Hurkacz, it seems that there’s little that can be done to stop him. Let’s see if he can be competitive here against Karatsev and push him for a spot in the next round at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Aslan Karatsev and Grigor Dimitrov have met once before, with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the start of the year in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, with Karatsev taking him out in four sets. It was a strange match, with Dimitrov hurting himself in the latter half of it, gifting Karatsev the last couple sets. It’s a favorable matchup for Karatsev, who plays a very aggressive game, and with the level that Dimitrov has consistently shown throughout the year, I expect him to play a very solid match, maintaining the aggression and power throughout too take out Dimitrov and progress to the semifinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.
