TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Frances Tiafoe takes on Thiago Monteiro in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe get a straightforward win? Will Thiago Monteiro pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see the level of Tiafoe and whether or not he has what it takes to step up and go all the way. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Frances Tiafoe got a great win over Andy Murray, defeating him 7-6 6-3. Serving exceptionally well, striking the ball super clean and hard off of both wings, doing exactly what he needed to with aggressive groundstrokes and plays, taking care of him in a relatively straightforward manner. He has another great opportunity to progress in Thiago Monteiro, a less known player on the ATP Tour who primarily likes the clay, this is a great chance for Tiafoe to show off his aggressive tennis and to move on to the next round. As long as he serves like he did today, and just stays consistent in terms of what he wants to do, I don’t foresee many problems for Frances as he will play to go through to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Thiago Monteiro has a very tough one in store ahead, with a late pull out from David Goffin, he got to play a player much less in quality than that of Goffin, being able to put him away in straight sets. Despite that, Tiafoe will be very hard for him, as he does not have the strongest serve and relies mostly on taking lots of time to hit his shots and likes to grind on the baseline (making him a great clay court player), it will be very hard to do that against Tiafoe. Considering how hard and flat he hits, and how he loves to take the ball early, Monteiro wil not have a lot of time to recover shot for shot and grind it out from the baseline, as Tiafoe will be trying to play aggressive whenever he can and go for aggressive groundstrokes and serving, which will most likely be too difficult for Thiago Monteiro to be able to deal with.
Frances Tiafoe and Thiago Monteiro have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. As mentioned before, Tiafoe is not the best match up for Monteiro, as he loves to take the ball early and play offensive tennis, which is not something Thiago is used to dealing with, considering he likes to wait a little longer before hitting his shots and try to play a less aggressive Nadal-like type style. This will not be effective against Tiafoe in most instances though, as it’s a hard court and with the form Tiafoe is in, Monteiro will need to serve above average to make it to the tiebreakers, as I sincerely doubt he’ll have many opportunities to break aside from the occasional mishaps Tiafoe makes himself on his own serve. I expect Tiafoe to get a nice, straightforward win tomorrow to move through to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
