TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as John Millman (8) will face Mikael Ymer in the First Round on Tuesday September 27th, 2021.
An interesting match is upon us here at the 2021 Sofia Open as the veteran Aussie John Millman will face the young talent Mikael Ymer of Sweden in the First Round. Both men have been in relatively similar form recently and will be confident of getting the win here. Ymer will also be out for revenge for his brother’s straight sets defeat to Millman in Washington a couple months ago, while John Millman will be eager to dish out the same punishment to the younger sibling. Who will win here and advance to the Round of 16?
John Millman is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #55 on the ATP Tour. The highly experienced Aussie has built up a reputation as one of the toughest and most hardworking players on the circuit, heavily relying on footwork, grit, speed and determination to grind out his results. The Aussie is a very solid all-around player with no major strengths nor weaknesses. He enters this event in decent form, reaching the Quarter-Finals last week at the Astana Open, however he will have been disappointed at not being able to defend his title there. His first opponent here in Sofia, Mikael Ymer is a promising young player who has recently started registering some wins on the ATP Tour after mainly plying his trade on the Challenger Circuit. Millman should be considered the favorite here but should be wary of his talented young opponent.
Mikael Ymer is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #85 in the world. The talented youngster is enjoying a breakout season of sorts, reaching three ATP Quarter-Finals and his first ATP Final at the Winston-Salem Open recently. He has a very aggressive baseline game which is sure to cause his opponent John Millman some issues on this quick indoor surface. However, Ymer is know to be erratic at times, and Millman’s consistency and “never say die” attitude are likely to force the youngster into making quite a lot of unforced errors. If Ymer is able to stay focused and keep his error count low he certainly has a good chance of the upset here given the surface, but it surely will be a hard fought and intense match.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very close battle. Both men are in good form at the moment and their contrasting styles will make for a very entertaining match to watch. Millman is a very solid counterpuncher, while Ymer will be relying on his power and movement to get the win here. While I think that Mikael Ymer is a very good player, I think that Millman’s experience and ultra-consistent style will be a bit too much for the youngster to handle. I do think that this match will go the distance, but experience usually wins out in very close matches and that is very likely here. It will be a tough match, but John Millman will win here, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Sofia Open.
