A very unexpected match awaits us in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The unseeded Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland has stunned the tennis world by advancing to the first Grand Slam Quarter-Final of her career, where she will meet the eighth seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Rebublic. Pliskova herself has been in poor form in recent months and will have been delighted to have reached this stage of the competition. Who will get the win here and advance to the Semi-Finals here at Wimbledon?
Karolina Pliskova is currently ranked #13 on the WTA Tour and is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Czech star is a former world number one, but has been struggling mightily over the past few seasons, finding her ranking slide out of the top 10. She has seemingly rediscovered her mojo here at Wimbledon however, and is seemingly back to her best. Pliskova is yet to lose a set so far here, impressively crushing the in-form Liudmila Samsonova in the Round of 16. What makes hat even more impressive is the fact that the Russian had been on a ten match winning streak on grass, and was expected to pose a stern test here. Pliskova is considered the heavy favorite here to advance over Viktorija Golubic but should be wary of her opponent’s strong form, and should not underestimate her.
Viktorija Golubic is currently ranked #66 in the WTA world rankings, and is a former top 50 player. After seeing her ranking drop outside the top 100, she has improved significantly, and her performances in Eastbourne made the field stand up and take note. After defeating highly rated Veronika Kudermetova in the First Round in three sets she has been absolutely dominant, defeating Danielle Collins and Madison Brengle in straight sets, hardly dropping any games. She then saved her most impressive match for last, cruising past Madison Keys in the Round of 16. While she will be the big underdog here against Karolina Pliskova, she is playing with nothing to lose which can always spell danger for higher-ranked opponents.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Viktorija Golubic leading the head to head series 1-0. However, not much should be taken from that result as it was over five years ago. This match seem straightforward on paper, but it is a potentially tricky match for Karolina Pliskova as she hasn’t played such strong tennis in a while, plus her opponent is on a serious heater at the moment. Viktorija Golubic has shocked the world by reaching the Quarters but I do think that her run ends here. Pliskova is more experienced on the big stage, and I expect her to get the hard-fought win here. She is playing with renewed confidence and that makes her a solid favorite here, and I see her advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
