TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Federico Delbonis in the Round of 32 on Monday, September 27th, 2021.
Will Aslan Karatsev move on? Will Federico Delbonis pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the hottest players of the year who is seemingly simmering down, let’s see if he can regain his form. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Aslan Karatsev has been out of form lately, here he has a good opportunity coming up against Federico Delbonis to see what he needs to improve to get back to his highest level. In order to get the win, he has to find his aggressive level once more, ripping the ball on returns, and constantly turning rallies into his favor, utilizing his booming groundstrokes to run his opponents off the court and hit the absolutely exceptional winners that we’ve seen him hit time and time again. While he may lose the match, simply due to his own errors, I feel as if he’ll have learned from his mistakes at this point, as he really isn’t making too many of them, he has to be making more serves and probably trying to serve at a much faster pace. Let’s see if he can do that and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Federico Delbonis has a tough one ahead of him here in Aslan Karatsev, while Karatsev is not playing too well, Delbonis hasn’t had too much success this year, and Karatsev is still a top 30 player in the world. In order for Delbonis to take him out, he’ll have to try to hit the ball with a lot of height, as Karatsev has been very error-prone, if he can get the ball up above his shoulders, he’ll likely get many short replies, giving him some easy pickings. One thing that he will have to keep in check though, is his serve. He has a rather unorthodox serve, and it isn’t particularly effective, with someone who has such a good return in Aslan Karatsev, he will have to be wary of that and make sure Karatsev doesn’t attack him too much, but ultimately, if he does, it’s not like he’ll have too much to do about it.
Aslan Karatsev and Federico Delbonis have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s an interesting matchup, an aggressive, flatter ball-striker coming up against a guy who likes to hit a lot higher with lots of topspin. I think it will mostly depend on Karatsev, as it is a pretty favorable matchup for him. I think he’ll take a lot of the balls early, and he’ll be able to generate a lot of his own pace and just play that aggressive game that we know he has in him. Let’s see if Karatsev can meet expectations to take this one and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open.
