TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Fabio Fognini takes on Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 32 on Monday, September 27th, 2021.
Will Fabio Fognini move on? Will Brandon Nakashima pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a veteran of the ATP Tour taking on a next-gen star. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Fabio Fogini hasn’t been playing too well this year, losing early in many tournaments. He has had his moments, however, I just don’t think he has the game at the moment to take on Nakashima, who has been playing really well. While he is technically the favorite, and it would not be surprising at all if experience trumped youth, I don’t feel like he has the firepower anymore to conquer someone like Nakashima. I do think the match won’t be straightforward by any means, and it could very well go the distance, however, I think he will get his serve bombarded a lot, and I think that he won’t have too many opportunities on return. Having said that, historically, Fognini is a very talented player with a versatile game, he has brilliant groundstrokes and I certainly expect him to have a foot down in this match as he tries to take out Nakashima for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Brandon Nakashima has been playing very well, winning many matches this year. He has a good opportunity to take out a top player here coming up against Fabio Fognini, who has not been playing too well this year. Nakashima has a pretty versatile game, with great groundstrokes and a solid serve, as of now, I think he has a lot more motivation and firepower off the ground than Fognini does, and while there’s no question that historically, Fognini is a much better player, at the moment, Nakashima has the edge in practically every aspect. Let’s see if he can play some great tennis to pull off the upset and head through to the next round at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Fabio Fognini and Brandon Nakashima have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Unsurprisingly, they have never met before, I do expect this match to be a fun one, as Fognini always brings the energy to a tennis court, and Nakashima has the type of game where he can play pretty aggressively and challenge someone like Fognini. The result of the match will likely depend on whether or not Nakashima is able to simply take care of the opportunities that he will inevitably be presented with. I think he’ll get a lot of short balls, and I think from the back of the court there will be shots where he can run Fognini around the court and get some easy pickings on that end, let’s see if he can pull off the upset to head through to the next round at the 2021 San Diego Open.
