TennisSection previews the 2021 Marseille Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Egor Gerasimov in the second round on Thursday, March 11 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get back to winning ways after suffering a shocking defeat just last week in the first round of the 2021 Rotterdam Open? Will Egor Gerasimov put on yet another superb performance as he did in his first round encounter? This is going to be a very interesting encounter, and either player can come out on top here. Who will book their spot in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Marseille Open?
Egor Gerasimov has been playing some solid tennis as of recent, losing in the first round of the Rotterdam Open but pushing Stefanos Tsitsipas to the edge in a very tight straight sets loss. Gerasimov is very powerful on these indoor hard courts and he showed exactly that in his first round match. Gerasimov met Yannick Hanfmann in the first round, beating the German in straight sets 6-2/6-0. Gerasimov has a massive serve, and when it is firing, he can get on top of the rally early on and dictate the entire match. They way Gerasimov powers his way through opponents is a very important aspect to his game, and he will definitely become tougher to beat as he gains more and more experience on the main tour. Can Egor Gerasimov cause what would be yet another upset against Daniil Medvedev on Thursday to book his spot in the Quarter-Finals?
Daniil Medvedev will be looking to bounce back here in Marseille after his tough loss to Dusan Lajovic just last week in the first round of the 2021 Rotterdam Open. Medvedev has been playing lights out tennis from the end of October 2020 to the end of February 2021, winning 20 matches in a row. After his loss to Novak Djokovic in the Final of the Australian Open, it was clear Medvedev lost the momentum. Daniil will want to get that momentum going again, as we all know that when he plays with confidence, Medvedev is one of the toughest players to beat. When he is low on confidence, he can let an upset or two slip in. Medvedev lost in his first round here in Marseille last year to Gilles Simon and he will want to prevent the same thing from happening this year as he meets Egor Gerasimov.
This is going to be the fifth meeting between Daniil Medvedev and Egor Gerasimov, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-1. The only time Egor Gerasimov beat Daniil was in 2015. Since then, Medvedev has just continued to grow as a player and his level of play has skyrocketed. Egor Gerasimov has also improved throughout that time, becoming a main player in ATP 250 and 500 tournaments, but he is still nowhere near Daniil’s level. Daniil is determined to get the momentum back after that shocking loss last week, and he will come out ready to give it his all from the first to the last point. Don’t get me wrong, we will see a lot of back and forth between these two players, but at the end of the day, Daniil Medvedev will get the job done here in two tight sets.
