TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Jannik Sinner (5) meets Mackenzie McDonald in the Final on Sunday August 8th, 2021.
Can the teenage superstar Jannik Sinner claim the third ATP Title of his short career? Or can the American Mackenzie McDonald cause the big upset and take his first ever title? Both men have been fantastic so far here at the 2021 Washington Open and are fully deserving of the title, but only one can win. Who will it be?
Jannik Sinner is currently ranked #24 in the world rankings and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Washington Open. The Italian phenom is only 19 years of age, but has already established himself as one of the best young talents on the ATP Tour, and is a lock for the top 10 in the very near future. After a very strong start to the year by claiming his second title and reaching his first Masters-1000 Final in Miami he has plateaued somewhat, and will be delighted to have found form again. Yet to lose a set this week, he was clinical in his Semi-Final win over the impressive Jenson Brooksby, dictating play from the baseline and using his forehand to great effect. If he is able to keep his error count low, he is the heavy favorite to lift his first ATP-500 title here against Mackenzie McDonald.
Mackenzie McDonald is unseeded here at the 2021 Washington Open and is ranked #107 in the world. The American has had a very inconsistent career so far, splitting his time between the ATP and Challenger Tours but has always been capable of some great tennis. He has put it together this week to reach his first ever ATP-500 Final, and is playing some confident, attacking tennis. His “never say die” attitude was on full display in his Semi-Final upset win over Kei Nishikori, where he displayed tremendous heart and effort to pull out the close win. His fitness and movement are his major weapons, and he has a relentless attacking game despite his small stature. He will not be able to keep up with his opponent Jannik Sinner in the power department however, and will have to get creative and keep his unforced errors low if he is to stand any chance here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it is looking like one way traffic. Jannik Sinner is only 19 years of age but is already quite experienced in the latter stages of these tour-level events, while Mackenzie McDonald is not, despite being older. The Italian checks all the boxes and has an advantage in most departments, and I think that he has too much firepower for the American who will struggle to get in any rhythm due to Sinner’s relentless attacking game from the baseline. McDonald is a fighter and he won’t make it easy, but expect Jannik Sinner to win comfortably here, claiming his first ever ATP-500 title at the 2021 Washington Open.
