TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Elina Svitolina (5) meets Simona Halep (12) in the Round of 16 on Sunday September 5th, 2021.
A huge battle is expected here at the 2021 US Open as Elina Svitolina and Simona Halep square off for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Both women are highly experienced and seem to be in fantastic form here at Flushing Meadows, and will be desperate to get the win here. Will it be the veteran Halep overcoming her recent struggles to reach her first major Quarter-Final in quite some time? Or the talented Ukrainian reaching the Quarters here for the second time? Regardless of the outcome, some high quality tennis is sure to be on display, who has what it takes to advance?
Elina Svitolina is the #5 seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently the world number five. The Ukrainian has been one of the most solid and consistent performers on the WTA Tour, but is still chasing that elusive Grand Slam. She has performed well at most of the events that he has played and will hope that he can keep that momentum going. The fifth seed has started strongly here in New York, defeating Masarova and Marino both in straight sets. She then produced a dominant performance to defeat Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-2. The 2019 Semi-Finalist here at the US Open seems to be in great form, but she always tends to succumb to the pressure at the majors and it will be very interesting how she responds to the challenge that her next opponent Simona Halep is sure to bring.
Simona Halep is the 12th seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #13 on the WTA Tour. She has finally started to find form after being out of sorts over the past few seasons, and has been playing her trademark aggressive baseline style. Straight sets wins over Kristina Kucova and Camila Giorgi will have given her a lot of confidence but it was her three set victory over the in-form Elena Rybakina that really showed that she is back to her best, and she really displayed her best tennis in that encounter. She attacked well, defended well and was able to show composure during the key moments of a match that she easily could have lost. Halep getting back to her best is a great thing for the WTA Tour, and it will be interesting to see how she responds in her next match. She will face the world number 5 Elina Svitolina who has beaten her on numerous occasions. If Halep brings her best tennis we will be in for a battle but she should be considered the slight underdog here in New York.
This will be the tenth time that the two players have faced each other on the WTA Tour, with Elina Svitolina leading the head to head 5-4. The matches are always close when they meet, and full of top class tennis. Elena Svitolina may seem to be the obvious choice since she has been having a good season while Simona Halep is only now beginning to find her range again after two poor seasons in a row. However, I am going with the experienced Halep here. She seems locked in and fully fit, and she has extensive experience at this stage of Grand Slam events. Svitolina is a great player but tends to struggle with the pressure at the Majors, and his match is sure to be filled with high pressure situations. I am expecting a three set battle but give me experience when things get close, and Simona Halep will be advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 US Open.
