TennisSection previews the 2021 Belgrade Open as Dusan Lajovic (5) meets Andrej Martin in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday May 27th, 2021.
World number #30 Dusan Lajovic had been in miserable form so far in 2021 prior to the 2021 Belgrade Open. Can he continue his winning ways by advancing to the Semi-Finals here? Or will Andrej Martin cause the upset and get the win here?
Dusan Lajovic is currently ranked #30 in the ATP world rankings and is seeded fifth at the 2021 Belgrade Open. The Serb is normally known for his consistent results, especially on clay but has seriously struggled in recent months, losing six consecutive First Round matches. Despite this, he has played well so far here in Belgrade, getting a confidence boosting win over Ricardas Berankis in the First Round before defeating Jeremy Chardy in straight sets to reach the Quarter-Finals. Lajovic returned serve extremely well during that encounter, earning a whopping 18 break points, and will be hoping to go one step further, reaching his first Semi-Final of the season. His opponent Andrej Martin is ranked almost 90 spots lower than he is, and he enters this match as the favorite.
Andrej Martin is ranked #119 in the world, and came through the Qualifying Rounds to enter the main draw at the 2021 Belgrade Open. Like his opponent Dusan Lajovic he has been having some poor results lately, but has seemed to strike form here. After defeating Chistopher O’Connell in the First Round, he upset third seeded Nikolosz Basilashvili in the Round of 16, a match not many would have expected him to win. His solid baseline style countered the Georgian’s attacking very well, and he was able to come away with a hard fought victory. Despite his strong play, he enters this match as the huge underdog against a highly experienced opponent and will have to be at his best here to reach the Semi-Finals.
This will be the first time the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is a tricky match to call due to the indifferent form of the two players coming into this event, but I am going with Dusan Lajovic to get the win here. The Serbian is highly experienced, and has the added boost of playing at home. He will have been delighted to strike form right before the French Open, and I expect him to be able to grind out a tough victory here over Andrej Martin. Dusan Lajovic will win, and advance to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Belgrade Open.
