TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Andy Murray faces on Denis Shapovalov (10) in the Round of 64 on Friday, July 2nd 2021.
Will Andy Murray continue his miraculous comeback? Will Denis Shapovalov make a show of strength and end the former champion’s run? Friday’s contest will make for a really interesting match, to see whether Murray can show he’s still on top with the big boys, or if Shapovalov can show that he’s ready to make some deep slam runs himself. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Andy Murray is coming into the third round after having to play a brutal 5 setter, coming back to win from 2 sets to 1 down over Oscar Otte. Obviously, he has had his troubles in the last few years, with injuries to his hip, he was out of it for a long time. Now, back on the ATP Tour with a metal hip, he’s playing and winning matches at the grand slam level, an unbelievable effort by Andy. He raised a big red flag in his first round match, being up two sets to love and 5-0 in the third, then losing that set 5-7. He stormed back in the fourth 6-3, but nonetheless, the fact is that he still managed to let a 5-0 lead slip away, I think this definitely hints at the fact that he’s not totally mentally set in yet, as when Murray was still at the top of the ATP Tour, something like this would have never happened. While his level of play was clearly good enough to defeat two solid opponents, it’s not as if Andy’s level of play was that high, especially compared to normal. I believe that he has it in him, he will need to play aggressive, as his opponent is a super aggressive player himself, and you can’t get too defensive on the grass. Overall, it’ll be a really tough match for him, and he’ll have to do some out of the box playing to get through.
Denis Shapovalov is coming into the third round with what you’d assume would be loads of energy. After playing five tough sets in the first round, his opponent withdrew before the second round match started. While Shapovalov is the heavy favorite on paper, one thing he doesn’t have is experience, he doesn’t have that grit. There aren’t many more players with more of that than Murray. If Denis gets too tight thinking about the situation, that he can defeat a tennis legend and move on to the second week, he could fold under the pressure and throw away this amazing opportunity. He needs to stay solid, and play his normal level of tennis. While Shapovalov can be inconsistent at times, he has his ranking for a reason, and he needs to bring out that level of tennis come Friday.
Andy Murray and Denis Shapovalov have never played before, with this being their first career meeting. This matchup promises to be a very interesting one, and I do expect Shapovalov to come out on top without much resistance, but with someone like Andy, you can never know for sure. What we do know is that practically everything you can think of, it favors Denis. Andy will have to play some lights out tennis that I do think he can pull out, given his history, and especially that this is a grass court, and at home. I expect this match to be a good one, let’s see who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
