TennisSection previews the 2022 Citi Open as Nick Kyrgios takes on Marcos Giron in the first round on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022.

Will Nick Krgios get back to winning ways at the Citi Open? Or will Marcos Giron cause a major upset when he takes on the flamboyant Aussie? This should be an intriguing matchup in store.
Nick Kyrgios will mark his return to singles action for the first time since his Wimbledon finals defeat to Novak Djokovic. The mercurial Aussie is a former champion of the Citi Open after his sensational title triumph in 2019 where he defeated StefanosTsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev in back-to-back matches. Kyrgios was set to play last in Atlanta, but pulled out on short notice due to a left knee problem. He issued a public apology for his inability to compete at the tournament although he did play a couple of matches in doubles alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Marcos Giron, for his part, lost in the first round in Atlanta to Soonwoo Kwon in three sets. It has been strange season for Giron whose fluctuating brilliance has often been usurped by moments of inconsistency throughout the year. The American baseliner is 3-8 on outdoor hard courts in 2022 and hasn’t won a match on home turf since beating Tennys Sandgren at the Delray Beach Open in mid-February. Can he change the script at the Citi Open when he takes on Nick Kyrgios?
Nick Kyrgios and Marcos Giron have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Their clash at the Citi Open will be their first official meeting. Few players can live up to Nick Kyrgios when his game is firing on all cylinders. The Aussie has been involved in just a handful of tournaments this season, but his form has been brilliant. Assuming he has overcome any niggling injuries, Kyrgios looks poised to win on his return.
