Melbourne Open 2022: Adrian Mannarino vs. Botic van de Zandschulp Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Melbourne Open as Adrian Mannarino takes on Botic van de Zandschulp in the first round on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022.

Will Adrian Mannarino go against the grain and make a fast start to his 2022 campaign? Or will Botic van de Zandschulp carry on from where he left off in 2021? Historically, Mannarino is slow off the blocks during these warm-up events prior to Australian Open. But can that scenario change at the 2022 Melbourne Open?

Adrian Mannarino begins his 2022 ATP Tour campaign whilst occupying his lowest position in the rankings in more than five years. Mannarino sits at 71st in the standings, way below his Tuesday opponent at the Melbourne Open Botic van de Zandschulp. Mannarino went 14-26 during the entire 2021 season, although he scored two top-10 wins, over Andrey Rublev and Dominic Thiem respectively. Part of the reason the Frenchman’s ranking plummeted substantially was his inability to string back-to-back wins on a consistent basis. He won a measly two matches in almost four months during the first half of last season, leaving him with all to play for during the second half of the campaign.

Botic van de Zandschulp, for his part, enjoyed a remarkable rise. The Dutchman successfully qualified at all four Grand Slams last season, and memorably reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. While there was no silverware to show for his efforts, van de Zandschulp became a household name within the tennis fraternity. Wins over the likes Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud ranked highly in his resume. The 26-year-old soared to a career-high ranking of World No. 57 – a jump of almost 100 places from the start of the year.

Adrian Mannarino and Botic van de Zandschulp have not played each other at any level before this. Mannarino has struggled to find his feet right out of the gate in recent seasons. This explains why he has only managed to reach the third round of the Australian Open on two occasions in 12 appearances. Van de Zandschulp should fancy his chances at the prospect of defeating the former World No. 22. Not only does the Dutchman tick all the boxes on the self improvement chart, but has the variety to keep Mannarino on the hook for three sets.
