TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Taylor Fritz on Day 2 on Sunday, January 2nd, 2022.
Will Taylor Fritz get a very strong win under his belt as he comes out as the No.1 player for Team USA? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime show us why he is such a great player and knocking on the door of the top 10? Both players are young and eager to get some good matches under their belt at the start of the 2022 season, but who will get off to the better start at the 2022 ATP Cup?
Taylor Fritz will be looking to get some strong performances for Team USA under his belt here at the 2022 ATP Cup. Taylor was at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship just a few weeks ago, where he was both good and terrible at the same time. In his match against Shapovalov he lost in less than an hour 3-6/0-6, and in his match against Evans the next day he was able to win a tight 3-setter. Taylor is a good player with a huge serve, forehand, and great movement for a tall guy. However, what he lacks is consistency and he will know that he is going to have to raise his level quite a bit now that he meets Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Felix Auger-Aliassime knows that if he is at his absolute best he is as capable as the bottom half of the top 10 in the world, and he will want to get back into the top 10 and get some titles under his belt in 2022. There are 2 things which are holding Felix from reaching his potential in my opinion, his second serve, and his concentration at times. Felix has huge power and he can beat anyone of his peer group when he is at his best. We have seen him come out strongly in Australia in prior years and the young Canadian will be looking to do exactly the same here at the 2022 ATP Cup as he meets Taylor Fritz.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Taylor Fritz have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Taylor played incredibly well in 2021, winning nearly as many matches as Felix. However, from what I saw from the American at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships, I am not too sure whether he is at his best currently. Felix has been working hard and I know that if he is firing on his serve, the rest of his game will be fine. It will be a tight match between these two youngsters, but I think that the Canadian will come out here and show us why he is an incredible star and definitely a candidate for the ATP Finals in 2022. I think Felix will win in 3 tight sets at the 2022 ATP Cup.
