TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Diego Schwartzman (10) meets Philipp Kohlschreiber (PR) in the Round of 32 on Saturday, June 5th 2021.
Can Philipp Kohlschreiber be able to get another superb upset under his belt as he aims to show us that he is not to be underestimated? Will Diego Schwartzman continue to cruise through his matches here at Roland Garros as he is finding his best form again after a tough first half of the year? This is going to be a much more interesting match now that Philipp put on a great performance in the Round of 64. Will we see a strong Schwartzman performance or a Kohlschreiber upset?
Philipp Kohlschreiber shocked everyone in the Round of 64, beating one of the most in form players of 2021, Aslan Karatsev, in 4 sets 6-3/7-6/4-6/6-1. Philipp has so much experience on the ATP Tour, but over the last 2/3 years he has been basically nowhere to be found in main tour tournaments. Philipp is ranked 132nd in the world now, and he entered the tournament due to a protected ranking due to having some injury issues which saw him fall down the ranks. However, Kohlschreiber has been in great form in his first two matches here at the 2021 French Open, only losing 2 sets along the way. Philipp Kohlschreiber will now face the toughest challenge he has all week as he meets the clay expert of Diego Schwartzman. Can the German cause another upset?
Diego Schwartzman turned the tables on Aljaz Bedene in the Round of 64, closing their head to head to 2-4 now by beating his opponent in straight sets 6-4/6-2/6-4. Diego Schwartzman has not had the toughest draw so far, but he knows that he has been putting on some strong performance because he has not let himself lose a set and give up some momentum during a match. Diego was the semi-finalist last year at Roland Garros, and he will want to defend those points for as long as possible, therefore anyone who meets him until the later rounds will have a tough battle on their hands, especially someone who has been away from the ATP Tour for a long time like Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Diego Schwartzman and Philipp Kohlschreiber have met 1 time before, with Philipp Kohlschreiber leading the head to head 1-0. They met on an indoor hard court in 2017, and Philipp won 7-5/7-6. It was a very tight match in conditions which suited Philipp much more. Now, here at the 2021 French Open, I am sure that Diego Schwartzman will get the match under his belt here as he has both the advantage of playing on his favourite surface, but also having more momentum as he has played much more than Philipp in big tournaments over the last 2 years. We cannot discount Philipp’s upset against Karatsev, and therefore I will give him 1 set in this match, but nothing more.
