TennisSection previews the 2022 US Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022.

Will Carlos Alcaraz get the win? Will Jannik Sinner pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where the two prophesied talents of the future meet in their biggest encounter yet. Who will triumph and move through to the semifinals at the 2022 US Open?
Carlos Alcaraz took down Marin Cilic in a hard fought epic, a match of the highest quality going to 5 and finishing in the later hours of the night. As he comes up against Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz will be very wary and cautious of his strategy going into this match. In order to win this one, he’s going to have to finish points very quickly, and stay out of the longer rallies, as I really don’t see him being able to outlast his opponent in the longer exchanges. Let’s see if the Spaniard can manage to book his first major semifinal at the 2022 US Open.

Jannik Sinner got through Ilya Ivashka in 5 sets, really not an ideal scoreline for Sinner, but he got it done in the end and booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time, now having reached the last eight at every grand slam. As he comes up against Carlos Alcaraz, it’ll be by far his biggest challenge so far this tournament. Although Sinner has a good say in this matchup, being able to really penetrate the Alcaraz serve and hit through the court very well preventing Alcaraz from being too aggressive, Sinner will have to bear in mind the movement of Alcaraz is superb, and if he wants to win the match, he’ll have to stray away from ending points quickly and instead trying to win all the longer exchanges here at the 2022 US Open.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have met three times before, with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 2-1. Their only meeting on hard courts came in 2021 in the Paris Masters, with Alcaraz taking it 7-6 7-5. Granted, that court was very slow and Sinner’s more recent results against him bear more weight for me here. But, the match could go either way depending on which player serves better. If Sinner serves well, there’s no question for me that he’ll win the match, but Alcaraz, even at his serving best, he’s not particularly potent, so in any case, this match could come down to the slimmest of margins, but I just really like this matchup for Sinner, and I expect a highly entertaining affair as the Italian wins the battle of the next-gen stars to book himself a place in his very first major semifinal of the 2022 US Open.
