TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open third-round match featuring Bernabe Zapata Miralles vs. Roman Safiullin on Monday, May 1, 2023.
Bernabe Zapata Miralles vs. Roman Safiullin Preview
The round of 16 awaits one of Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Roman Safiullin who clash on Monday at the Madrid Open. Who will prevail?
It’s been a rocky road for Bernabe Zapata Miralles to get to the third round of the Madrid Open. He survived an incredible tussle against Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round where he saved two match points, winning that match from a set down in a final set tiebreak. His second round was slightly easier where he surprisingly grounded Dan Evans 6-3, 6-2.
Roman Safiullin, for his part, has accounted for two monstrous upsets, beating in-form Santiago champion Nicolas Jarry and top-20 player Tommy Paul, to reach an unlikely third round. Safiullin, lest we forget, came through qualifying, and has only dropped one set in four matches at the Madrid Open.
Bernabe Zapata Miralles vs. Roman Safiullin Prediction and Pick
Bernabe Zapata Miralles and Roman Safiullin have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this third-round match being their first meeting. Despite sitting outside the top 100, Safiullin served a reminder it’s not too big a gap in terms of quality with the ATP’s top 50 or top 20 club. Clay is Zapata Miralles’ cup of tea, but conditions have been slightly tricky for him, especially in his opener against McDonald. And the odds here should have been closer, with the bookies seemingly giving the Spaniard a lot more respect here.
