TennisSection previews the 2021 Belgrade Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Alex Molcan in the Final on Saturday May 29th 2021.
Will Novak Djokovic claim the title at his home tournament the 2021 Belgrade Open? Or can young Alex Molcan of Slovakia cause yet another massive upset? World number one Djokovic has his eyes firmly on the prize as he seeks to conclude his preparations for Roland Garros, but all the talk has been about the Qualifier Molcan who has taken everyone by surprise. Can he cause what would be the biggest upset of the year by winning the title?
World number one Novak Djokovic has truly been having a surprising season in 2021. The Serbian star has had a very uncharacteristically inconsistent season so far, and has had quite a few surprising losses. He entered the 2021 Belgrade Open in stunning fashion, crushing everyone in his path en route to the Semi-Finals. That trend was seemingly continuing against Andrej Martin, as he dominated the first set. However, he dropped the second set due to losing his focus, but regrouped well to win the third 6-0. We are not used to such inconsistent performances from the number one seed, and he will have to be much improved if he is to challenge for the Roland Garros title. Despite his mixed form, he enters the Final here as the massive favorite over surprise package Alex Molcan.
Alex Molcan truly has been a surprise package this week here at the 2021 Belgrade Open, and has dominated all opponents that he has faced so far with his attacking baseline game. After coming through the Qualifying Rounds he has simply blitzed his way to his first ATP Final. What makes the feat even more impressive is that he had never won an ATP match before this week, and is now in with a chance of winning a title. Despite his heroics this week, he will be facing one of the best tennis players in history in Novak Djokovic, and while the Serbian has been in poor form of late, Molcan should be considered the huge underdog here. Djokovic has been showing lapses in concentration, and if Molcan can take advantage then he can possibly make things interesting for a while, but winning will be a very tough ask of the youngster.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is an extremely straightforward match to predict, and it will end with a win for world number one Novak Djokovic. Despite his strange season and Alex Molcan’s outstanding form, there is simply no way that Novak will lose to a Qualifier ranked over 250 spots below him in the rankings. Molcan has a big game and is one to watch for the future, but he will have to be content with a Finals appearance here at the 2021 Belgrade Open. Novak Djokovic will win and become champion here in Belgrade.
