TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Round of 64 on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime move on? Will Albert Ramos-Vinolas pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will if one of the most in-form players on the tour as of late still has the level to go deep here. Who will move onto the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Felix Auger-Aliassime has been playing some excellent tennis, making a run to the semifinals before dropping out to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. He’s been serving incredibly well, and he’s been very consistent from the back of the court, also being able to pack a huge punch behind his shots and be very aggressive. He has a great opportunity against Albert Ramos-Vinolas to get a good start to his campaign here in Indian Wells and show if he still has his level. FAA has historically been a very inconsistent player, but he seemed to have brought over everything to the Laver Cup from the USO aside from his mental strength. His inability to play crucial points well is what holds him back. Although here his opponent isn’t nearly as strong, so I expect him to wrap up a nice easy win and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas got a great win against Lorenzo Musetti, while Musetti was not playing anywhere near his best tennis, he still pulled off the upset and played some very consistent tennis. If Ramos-Vinolas is lucky, then he can hold Felix Auger-Aliassime off with his consistency in the tight moments, as FAA most certainly has the block in that area. However, Auger-Aliassime is still ranked as high as he is for a reason, and on a court like Indian Wells, I expect him to play very well as he just has so many weapons that he can be aggressive with. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain his level and assert himself as a consistent top-dog on the ATP Tour, let’s see if he can move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Albert Ramos-Vinolas have met twice before, with Felix Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head 2-0. The two wins came in 2019, with Felix winning easily on hard courts and with a little struggle on the clay, but still in straight sets. If Auger-Aliassime is beating a clay-courter on his own turf when he wasn’t nearly as good as he is today, then I really don’t expect Ramos-Vinolas to be able to do much about it, as he seemingly is just a very good match-up against him. It will be interesting to see if he can bring his level here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open!
