Madrid Open 2023: Pedro Cachin vs. Jan-Lennard Struff Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Madrid Open fourth-round match featuring Pedro Cachin vs. Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Pedro Cachin vs. Jan-Lennard Struff Preview

Will Jan-Lennard Struff reach back-to-back quarterfinals at Masters 1000 level? Or will Pedro Cachin’s breakthrough week at this level take him to the last eight at the Madrid Open?

Pedro Cachin continued his great run at the Madrid Open, beating another seed to reach an unlikely fourth round. Cachin, having eliminated Argentina’s No. 1 Francisco Cerundolo, was the steadier and more consistent baseliner in his third-round upset of Houston champion Frances Tiafoe. He won 6-1, 7-6, in just 80 minutes.

Jan-Lennard Struff, meanwhile, ended Dusan Lajovic’s career-best win streak at Tour level. Despite losing the first set tiebreak, Struff never relinquished his serve, completing a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over the Banja Luka champion. The German only entered the main draw as a lucky loser, but he’s now one match win away from reaching back-to-back Masters 1000 quarterfinals at the Madrid Open.

Pedro Cachin vs. Jan-Lennard Struff Prediction and Pick

Pedro Cachin and Jan-Lennard Struff have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with Tuesday’s match at the Madrid Open being their first meeting. It’s hard to call this match given how strong both players looked in their previous rounds. Cachin only dropped his serve once against Tiafoe which is such a big accomplishment albeit against a below-par performance from the American. Struff, for his part, was impregnable on serve, only losing the set in a tiebreak. I think there will be tension in their games here, Struff probably feeling it more given he is the slight favorite. That is not always a good thing and we’ve seen him implode quite a few times already this year under pressure. So Cachin might be worth backing along the sets spread.
