TennisSection previews the 2023 Charleston Open first-round match featuring Kaia Kanepi vs Madison Brengle on Monday, April 3, 2023.
Kanepi vs Brengle Match Preview
Kaia Kanepi is out of form, but she might possess the firepower to take down Madison Brengle who last won at the Charleston Open in 2015.
Kaia Kanepi is only 3-7 for the season. She has lost her last five matches coming to the 2023 Charleston Open. The scene of Kanepi’s last Tour-level win was in Adelaide 2 where she got into the event as a lucky loser and beat Storm Hunter. So it’s been nearly three months since the big Estonian last tasted victory and truthfully, she has had a handful of winnable matches in recent weeks. Can she turn her season around when she faces Madison Brengle?
Madison Brengle is 6-10 for the season. At least the American knows what victory tastes like, having won at least a match in each of her last three main draws. And Brengle will be feeling optimistic about ending her winless drought at the Charleston Open. She hasn’t recorded a victory in South Carolina since 2015.
Kanepi vs Brengle Prediction and Pick
Kaia Kanepi leads Madison Brengle 1-0 in their head-to-head, but that win came over eight years ago on hard courts. The formbook is a bit of a nonfactor in this one as both players switch surfaces for the first time. Kanepi is a sturdy competitor and will look to overpower Brengle. The American makes a living of grinding every point and every ball, so it is up to the Estonian to ensure she doesn’t miss a lot as she has in recent months. With that said, we’ll take Kanepi to edge this one by the narrowest of margins.
