Anhelina Kalinina reached the quarterfinal in her debut appearance at the Charleston Open last year, losing to eventual finalist Ons Jabeur. Kalinina has always produced her best tennis on clay highlighted by her only-ever appearance in a WTA final in Budapest. It is an important stretch for the Ukranian who currently sits in the world’s top 30 and will be looking to stay there to get a seeding spot at Roland Garros.

Anna Kalinskaya, meanwhile, comes into this first-round match at the Charleston Open looking to bounce back from her heartbreaking defeat to Elena Rybakina in Miami. The Russian had Rybakina on the ropes for much of that second-round meeting in Florida, but could not stay solid under a barrage of mounting pressure.
