TennisSection previews the 2021 Hamburg Open as Pablo Carreno Busta (2) meets Filip Krajinovic (6) in the Final on Sunday, July 18th 2021.
Will Filip Krajinovic finally achieve his biggest goal and win his maiden ATP Tour title after 13 years on the ATP Tour? Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue to show strong performances here in Hamburg and get his second title of the year as he enters the Final? Both players have played extremely well all week, but only one will end up being crowned the 2021 Hamburg Open Champion. Who will it be?
Filip Krajinovic cruised through his Semi-Final match against his fellow Serbian, Laslo Djere, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Filip Krajinovic will be extremely happy with this as he has now made his maiden ATP Tour Final and he will be giving himself a chance at his first ever title. Filip has beaten the top seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas, this week, so he will know that he can definitely win the title here at the 2021 Hamburg Open. However, he meets an opponent who has been solid on clay all year in Pablo Carreno Busta.
Pablo Carreno Busta came through a tight match against the lefty clay-court lover, Federico Delbonis, in the Semi-Finals, beating the Argentine in straight sets sets, 7-6/6-3. Pablo Carreno Busta knew he was going to have a tough battle against Delbonis, especially as Delbonis had won most of their prior encounters. However, he used all of the momentum he gained on clay this year and he was able to come in clutch in the big moments. Pablo will want to keep this going, and he will have a good shot at his 2nd title of the year, but he will have to be ready to fight as Filip Krajinovic seems determined.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Filip Krajinovic have met 3 times before, with Filip Krajinovic leading the head to head 2-1. They have always played tight 3 set matches, and on clay they are 1-1. They have not met on clay in 6 years and I expect for this to be a very tight match. Both of them have the experience and are the same age. But when we look at career statistics, Pablo is more clutch, he has won 5 titles, and he has won over 200 matches on the ATP Tour. Filip has won less than 90 matches, and he has never won a title before. Because Filip was able to beat Stefanos this week, I am sure he can take a set off of Pablo, but that’s it. Pablo’s clay court experience and game he has shown all year will win him his second title here at the 2021 Hamburg Open.
