TennisSection previews the 2021 Laver Cup as Casper Ruud takes on Reilly Opelka in the Day 1 Group Stage on Friday, September 24th, 2021.
Will Reilly Opelka show us some amazing tennis in his home country as he aims to bring the servebot back out? Will Casper Ruud show us that he is not just a clay court star as he aims to get the first point for Team Europe under his belt? Both players know they can beat each other, but only one will get things started positively for their team here at the 2021 Laver Cup. Who will it be?
Reilly Opelka has had a great summer in North America, making his maiden Masters 1000 Final in Toronto, and then making it to the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open. Reilly has shown us that he is more than just a serve, as he has been able to win sets against opponents before getting to a tiebreak. Reilly has focused a lot on his forehand and movement, and adding his huge serve to this, he knows he will be a huge threat in these indoor hard court conditions here at the 2021 Laver Cup. However, Opelka will need to be ready from the start as he meets an in form Casper Ruud.
Casper Ruud has played very well this year, showing us some amazing tennis, especially on clay where he won 3 titles in 3 weeks at one point this year. Casper Ruud has finally gotten into the Top 10 in the world, and he will want to keep this momentum going for the rest of the year because it will give him a strong chance to make the ATP Finals. Casper Ruud is known for his strong movement and spin on clay, but he has been getting some good results in other conditions. However, we have not really seen Casper’s game in indoor hard court conditions, so this is really unchartered territory at this level for the Norwegian. Can he get another win over Reilly Opelka here at the 2021 Laver Cup this year?
Casper Ruud and Reilly Opelka have met 3 times before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 2-1. They met a month or so ago at the 2021 Cincinnati Masters where Ruud won in 3 sets. Although Casper won that match, that was right after Opelka reached his maiden Masters 1000 Final so he was a bit tired. With both players coming into this match fresh, a vibrant US crowd backing Team World, and the fact that we are in indoor hard court conditions, I think Reilly will have an edge. Reilly can serve amazingly in these conditions, and Casper will struggle with the speed of the ball in my opinion here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
