TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Denis Shapovalov (13) meets Kamil Majchrzak (Q) in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, May 11th, 2021.
Will Kamil Majchrzak be able to continue performing strongly as he did in the qualifying rounds here at the 2021 Rome Open? Will Denis Shapovalov finally get some positive results on clay under his belt after a tough start to his clay-court swing this year? This will be an interesting match between a determined qualifier and an underperforming star. Who will make their way to the Round of 32?
Kamil Majchrzak has been able to beat two very tough players who were the heavy favourites in his matches in qualifying, Alexei Popyrin and Yoshihito Nishioka, to qualify for the main draw here at the 2021 Rome Open. This is never an easy task beating two experienced players, especially Popyrin who had just beaten Jannik Sinner last week in Madrid. Kamil Majchrzak is 25 years old, and he is not really known on the ATP Tour, mainly focusing his time on the Challenger Tour where his game has the most chance of actually getting to the later stages of tournaments. However, here in Rome, he has already beaten big named players, and he will now face an out of form Denis Shapovalov, and I am sure he will be filled with confidence.
Denis Shapovalov has underperformed for the last month on clay, going 2-3 in his W/L on clay, losing to opponents who he should be beating, such as Corentin Moutet. Denis Shapovalov has great talent, and has the game the challenge the best players in the world. However, I don’t trust him to deliver in the big moments because he is very inconsistent and he is not mature enough in my opinion. Unlike other players such as Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and others, who are able to maintain their composure even when things aren’t going their way, Denis just does not have that. Denis is an emotional player, and until he is able to control his own mentality, how can we expect him to control his game? However, he should be happy that he is meeting an easy opponent in Kamil Majchrzak in the Round of 64.
Denis Shapovalov and Kamil Majchrzak have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Denis Shapovalov has been out of form, and Kamil Majchrzak has beaten to great opponents in qualifying here at the 2021 Rome Open, Denis is still ranked 115 spots higher than him. This should be a straight sets victory for the young Canadian, as he has a much better game, and he can put him around more easily off the backhand side. However, if Denis does not perform here, he should really rethink his game and take some time off to regroup.
