TennisSection previews the 2022 Citi Open as Dan Evans takes on Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals on Thursday, August 4th, 2022.
Will Dan Evans get the win? Will Yoshihito Nishioka pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a very diverse and unique matchup for a spot in the last four. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Citi Open?
Dan Evans got through in a bit of an unfortunate situation against Taylor Fritz, winning after Fritz was forced to retire in the 3rd after feeling sick, with the heat getting to him. Although he was a little lucky, he was down a break in the 2nd, managing to recover it to force a 3rd. Although on paper he may be facing a far easier opponent, it’s a particularly difficult matchup for Evans as he comes up against Yoshihito Nishioka for a spot in the semifinals at the 2022 Citi Open.
Yoshihito Nishioka got a great win, taking out Karen Khachanov in 2 tiebreakers sending him through to the last eight where he will meet a fellow underdog for a spot in the last four. In order to win this one, he’s going to have to simply execute his typical gameplan, which so happens to work quite well against the Brit. Let’s see if he can keep it up as he looks to advance to the semifinals of the 2022 Citi Open.
Dan Evans and Yoshihito Nishioka have met four times before, with Yoshihito Nishioka leading the head to head 4-0. It’s an impeccable head to head for Nishioka, which should really give him a massive boost as he looks ahead to this one. As long as he keeps the rallies long, Evans really won’t be able to navigate the court as he typically does with his slices and aggressive gameplay. I expect this one to be a tussle nonetheless, but Nishioka being the ultimate winner as the two face for a place in the semifinals at the 2022 Citi Open.
