TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Marin Cilic in the Round of 16 on Monday, May 30th, 2022.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have the World No. 2 and suddenly the clear favorite in his quarter taking on a former major champion who may still have a trick up his sleeve. Who will triumph and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 French Open?
Daniil Medvedev got an excellent win over one of the form players on the ATP Tour right now in Miomir Kecmanovic, being one of the only top guys to have hardly been pushed so far in the tournament. Despite his infamous relationship with the clay, he’s shown excellent tennis on it and many now expect him to go further and further in the tournament. Marin Cilic is no easy opponent, but with their history and current results, I expect Medvedev to get the win in convincing fashion once again to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open in back to back seasons.
Marin Cilic has quite the match ahead of him in Daniil Medvedev, a very unlikely one for him to be able to pull through. He’s played some quick matches, just dropping the one set to Fucsovics in the second round. Medvedev is a bad matchup for him, especially on clay where his offense from the baseline will be minimized even more. Against Medvedev in general, that strategy of baseline punching will never work. If he wants to win, he’ll have to serve incredibly well and hope Medvedev doesn’t play as well as he has been, but with a player such good as Medvedev that seems quite unlikely as the No. 2 seed looks to rush into the last 8 of what is in reality now his 3rd best grand slam at the 2022 French Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic have met three times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-0. All their meetings have come off the clay, and if Cilic can’t take out Medvedev on his best surfaces, he won’t take down Medvedev here. Medvedev has shocked the tennis world with his stunning tennis so far, cruising through to the second week. Cilic hasn’t played so bad himself, but it’s an excellent matchup for the World No. 2 and I think any result other than a relatively straightforward win for Medvedev is likely here at the 2022 French Open.
