TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 on Monday, May 30th, 2022.
Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Jannik Sinner pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have two players very close in margin clashing in their biggest career meeting yet. Who will triumph and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 French Open?
Andrey Rublev took down Cristian Garin in a hard match, in 4 sets but 13-11 in the 4th set tiebreaker, he now looks ahead to Jannik Sinner, an even tougher battle ahead. Rublev is an excellent clay courter and he has had better career results than Sinner on the surface, while he very well could win and potentially meet his compatriot Daniil Medvedev in the last 8, Sinner has been more consistent throughout the clay season, getting an equal result in Monte-Carlo, but did better in Madrid, and Rome, even defeating him Madrid. While Rublev might not be the favorite in terms of recent results, he’s still the more experienced player and will without a doubt have his chances as he looks to make the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open for the first time in his career.
Jannik Sinner is looking to get back to where he was in 2020, where he made the quarterfinals taking out another high ranked player in Alexander Zverev. I think it’s very possible for him here, he’s had better results lately as outlined already and I think he has a great matchup to Rublev’s game. His return is very high tier on the tour, but more importantly it’s just so aggressive, allowing him to jump all over the lackluster second serve of Andrey Rublev. Let’s see if the young Italian can meet expectations and get through what might be quite the blockbuster as the two clash for a place in the quarterfinals at the 2022 French Open.
Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner have met three times before, with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 2-1. Rublev won their lone meeting on hard courts, but Sinner won their other two meetings, both coming on the clay. With their past head to heads, matches this tournament, and results on the clay this season, it will be quite the uphill battle for Rublev. These guys are close, and I expect a brutal blockbuster between the two which very well may go the distance as they clash for a spot to be the best of their quarter at the 2022 French Open.
