Will Carlos Alcaraz’s talent shine again? Or Will Karen Khachanov produce one of the shocks of this year’s French Open? We have seen cracks appear in Alcaraz’s game in the opening week, so we cannot entirely rule out an upset.
Carlos Alcaraz redeemed himself from his last match against Sebastian Korda – the only man to have beaten him on the European clay this season in Monte Carlo. The young Spaniard won the battle against his fellow Next Gen star 6-4 6-4 6-2 to book his berth in the second week of the French Open for the first time. Alcaraz produced a much better display than his nervy five-set win over Ramos Vinolas in the second round in which he saved a match point. He broke Korda early on and set the tone for a comfortable night under the lights.
Karen Khachanov, meanwhile, scored a terrific win over 10thseed Cameron Norrie to reach the second week of the French Open for the fifth time in six visits. The Briton came into the match as the oddsmakers favorite, having bagged a title at his last clay-court tournament in Lyon and looking extremely dominant in his opening two rounds. However, the Russian surprisingly dealt with Norrie’s topspin forehand by taking the ball extremely early and on the rise. Norrie’s good record over Khachanov counted for little on the face of his profligacy. He squandered 16 break points in the match, ending British interest at this year’s Roland Garros.
World No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz is yet to clash against Karen Khachanov at any level. Alcaraz has a lot of things going his way at the moment. And bar the serve, surpasses Khachanov in every other department. His extraordinary athleticism and heavy forehand make him tough to hit through. Khachanov is a safe bet to at least take a set, but expect the Spaniard’s talent to shine through en route to his first French Open quarterfinal.
