TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round on Saturday, May 28th, 2022.
Top seed Novak Djokovic will face his first acid test at the French Open on Sunday when he battles Diego Schwartzman. The Argentine has not beaten the World No. 1 before, but he has taken him very close on the dirt in each of their three meetings. Could the upset materialize in this one?
Novak Djokovic, like knife cutting through butter, has been cruising en route to the fourth round of the French Open. The pre-tournament favorite laid down a marker at the Rome Masters two weeks ago when he won his first title of 2022 without dropping a set, vanquishing all talk about his potential decline. Djokovic has been in top form and the scary thing is that he has barely needed to shift through the gears to reach the second week. Having eased his way past Aljaz Bedene in the previous round, he will need to be more proactive when he takes on Diego Schwartzman in an enticing fourth-round match.
Diego Schwartzman, meanwhile, has navigated his way into the second week under difficult circumstances. The 16th seed was pushed hard by Andrey Kuznetsov in the first round, but got the job done in four sets. But it was in the second round when he came agonizingly close to exit the tournament. Schwartzman trailed Jaume Munar by two sets to love before he embarked in a remarkable fight back to dig out an improbable win. His victory over Grigor Dimitrov in the third round was surprisingly his most comfortable as he recorded a straight sets win.
Novak Djokovic leads Diego Schwartzman 6-0 in their head-to-head. They have played at the French Open before back in 2017 when Djokovic was the defending champion. The Serbian World No. 1 was pushed to the limit but managed to hold off the Argentine in five. The scenario is not too dissimilar this time as Djokovic is the reigning Roland Garros champion. But unlike five years ago, Djokovic is playing pain-free and is well past his elbow issues.
