TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022.
Will Botic van de Zandschulp cause the biggest upset of the tournament so far as he aims to beat the world no.2? Will Daniil Medvedev improve on his solid performance against Nick Kyrgios in the second round? Both players are aiming to make it to the second week, but will we see a shocking upset here as Botic aims to shock the draw at the 2022 Australian Open?
Botic van de Zandschulp did not have to play a full match in his second round performance against Richard Gasquet, with the Frenchman winning the first set but then withdrawing after picking up an injury during the second. Botic is a great player and he made his breakthrough at the 2021 US Open. However, when it came round to his loss at the 2021 US Open, it was against none other than Daniil Medvedev. Botic did push the Russian in the match, so he might have some belief as he now meets him again at the 2022 Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev had to fight from all sides in his second round match, having to beat both Nick Kyrgios and the crowd. Medvedev was very composed on the court, which is a great improvement on his end, being able to not break any racquets, and not scream. The match was tight from start to finish, with Medvedev winning the two first sets in tight fashion, then Kyrgios starting somewhat of a comeback by winning the third, and then having a break point early in the fourth. However, Daniil Medvedev showed us why he is the world no.2 and just kept playing his tactics and he eventually won in 4. Will he be able to have an easier match as he now meets Botic van de Zandschulp at the 2022 Australian Open?
Daniil Medvedev and Botic van de Zandschulp have met 1 time before, with Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. They met last year at the US Open where Medvedevw on in 4 sets. Although the scoreline was quite dominant by Daniil, Botic was the only player during the US Open to have been able to take a set off of Medvedev. Here in Australia, both players are in form and determined to go far. However, the ability and game shown by Botic is nowhere near what we have seen from Medvedev this week. I see an easier match for Medvedev this time where he should not drop a set at the 2022 Australian Open.
