Frances Tiafoe cruised through his first round match here at the 2021 Barcelona Open, beating the up and coming Spaniard and future star of Spanish tennis, Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets 6-4/7-6(2). Tiafoe showed us some great tennis all throughout that match which I did not expect from him as I have not seen him play that well in a very long time. Frances Tiafoe was willing to take risks, but also was able to ensure he did not go for too much on every point, letting the rallies play out if need be. This is great to see from the American as it means his game is maturing and if we see his more often, I am sure he will be able to rise back up the rankings. Will this in form Frances Tiafoe be able to beat a top 10 player in Diego Schwartzman in the second round?
Diego Schwartzman will be looking to bounce back after a very tough first round loss just last week in the second round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, losing 3-6/3-6 to Casper Ruud. Diego is a great player on his day, but he has not shown us the consistency which we had seen from him in the later stages of 2020, which saw him reach the 2020 ATP Finals. However, I am very sure Diego used that loss last week in Monaco as motivation to come here to the 2021 Barcelona Open early and get his game up to speed on the training court. Diego Schwartzman will now want to show everyone that on clay, he is one of the best, and he will give it his best against Frances Tiafoe.
Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe have never met before on the ATP Tour, with this being their first encounter. Although they have never met, they have been so close to meeting before, and I am sure they would have studied each other’s game to ensure they were ready previously. This is definitely going to be a tight match as Frances Tiafoe is in strong form. However, I see Diego Schwartzman’s amazing rallying game, and his ability to just return everything bothering the American, and we will see him turn back into his old ways of trying to win points too quickly and making errors. Diego will win and make his way to the Third Round of the 2021 Barcelona Open.
