TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal on Friday, May 6th, 2022.
Novak Djokovic has now reached the quarterfinals or better in three of his four tournaments in 2022. The Serbian star remains on course to win his fourth career title at the Madrid Open. But before he sets his sight on the ultimate prize, he needs to take down Poland’s perennial danger Hubert Hurkacz. Will Djokovicprevail? Or will Hurkacz master the upset?
Novak Djokovic advanced into the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open without even picking up a racket. Djokovic’s much-anticipated third-round showdown against Andy Murray did not happen after the Scotsman withdrew due to a stomach illness. While Djokovic will be delighted to conserve some of his energy for more demanding matches later this week, there is no doubt that he would have loved to test himself against Murray and build on a very impressive win over Gael Monfils on Tuesday. Nonetheless the Serbian World No. 1 is now one match win away from setting up a potential semifinal meeting against his greatest rival Rafael Nadal. Will Djokovic overcome Hubert Hurkacz?
Hubert Hurkacz, in contrast, needed to earn his place in the last eight after beating Djokovic’s countryman Dusan Lajovic. The Pole needed to raise his level to stave off the challenges of Hugo Dellien and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the earlier rounds, before cruising past Lajovic. Hurkacz played immaculately against the less dangerous Serb, firing 16 aces and winning 83% first-serve points. He is into the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open for the first time.
Novak Djokovic will bring a dominant 3-0 head-to-head recordover Hubert Hurkacz into Friday’s quarterfinal match at the Madrid Open. Ideally, Djokovic would have loved to play on Thursday as he searches for momentum ahead of the French Open. But he has been getting better and hitting the ball with consistent precision with every match. I think he will be pushed, but he should have a lot of options at his disposal to withstand Hurkacz’s challenge.
