Madrid Open 2022: Alexander Zverev vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinal on Friday, May 6th, 2022.

Alexander Zverev made his way into the quarterfinals and is looking to defend the Madrid Open crown he won 12 months. The German second seed will battle Canada’s World No. 10 Felix Auger-Aliassime who produced a shock third-round win over Jannik Sinner. Who will reach the semifinals?

Alexander Zverev improved to 17-2 at the Madrid Open after his opponent Lorenzo Musetti retired hurt. Musetti had trailed the German 6-3 1-0 when an apparent thigh injury became too much to bear and he was unable to continue playing. Considering that their is the opportunity to perform in front of his home fans in Rome and Roland Garros around the corner, Musetti could not risk playing through pain and put his chances of playing at those aforementioned tournaments in jeopardy. Zverev, meanwhile, has now advanced into the quarterfinals in Madrid yet again.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, for his part, scored a fantastic victory over Jannik Sinner. He took just 80 minutes to record an emphatic 6-1 6-2 victory – undoubtedly his best performance on clay by some distance. In his first match against Cristian Garin, he also dropped only three games – so the Canadian is finding form at the right time. Can he upset the defending champion on Friday?

Alexander Zverev leads Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-2 in their head-to-head. Their only clay-court meeting prior to their scheduled bout at the Madrid Open took place in Monte Carlo in 2019 when an inexperienced Auger-Aliassime lost in straight sets. While the conditions in these parts suit Zverev’s high-powered game, Auger-Aliassime has also been reaping huge rewards with his risk-tolerant approach in the altitude. That explains why he has dominated the likes of Garin and Sinner to reach his first quarterfinal in Madrid. I do expect a high-quality affair between these two – they always bring it. With the kind of season Zverev has endured, we cannot rule out an upset in this one.
