Acapulco Open 2021: Alexander Zverev vs. Dominik Koepfer Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Acapulco Open as Alexander Zverev (2) meets Dominik Koepfer in the Semi-Finals on Friday March 19th, 2021.

This is a very surprising Semi-Final matchup to say the least, between the second seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and unseeded countryman Dominik Koepfer. Not many people would have predicted that Koepfer would be in the semis but he has played some fantastic tennis to reach this point. Can he take it a step further and advance to his first ATP-500 Final? Or will the heavily favored Zverev get the win and continue on his quest for his first title of the year? Who will win and advance to the Final here at the 2021 Acapulco Open?

Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #7 in the ATP world rankings, and is the second seed here at the 2021 Acapulco Open in Mexico. He has been in dominant form thus far, brushing aside Carlos Alcaraz and Laslo Djere in straight sets. He received a walkover in the Quarter-Final when Casper Ruud withdrew due to injury. This will ensure that the young German is very well rested for this Semi-Final encounter, and it seems that the stars are aligning for him here as he will face the unseeded Dominik Koepfer. Zverev would have expected to face someone like Milos Raonic in the Semis and will be delighted at the prospect of facing his #71 ranked opponent. He has been a finalist here before, and will be confident of going one better and winning the title this year.

Dominik Koepfer is ranked #71 in the world and prior to this tournament, had a negative win-loss record on the year. He will be delighted to have reached this far, and has played some inspired tennis to reach this stage. A strong baseliner, he also is yet to drop a set here at the 2021 Acapulco Open, upsetting Milos Raonic and Cameron Norrie in the process. He has returned extremely well so far this week, something that will be critical against Zverev who can struggle with his serve at times. The German certainly is a quality player, but he lacks one true weapon which is usually necessary to defeat the top players. While he enters this match as the huge underdog against his countryman Alexander Zverev, he will be very confident after his outstanding performances and very motivated to reach his first ATP Final.

The two German players have never faced each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. They are both yet to drop a set thus far here in Mexico, and have played some fantastic baseline tennis. While Koepfer will surely be full of confidence after his strong run, it is very likely that it ends here. He will be dangerous since he is seemingly playing with nothing to lose, and Zverev is known to struggle at time with nerves. However, Alexander Zverev has established himself as one of the top players in the world, and will be hugely motivated to win his first title of the 2021 season. He is quite simply on another level than Dominik Koepfer and he should dominate this match in straight sets. Alexander Zverev will win here and advance to the Final at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
