Next Gen ATP Finals 2021: Carlos Alcaraz vs. Juan Manuel Cerundolo Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the Round Robin Stage on Thursday, November 11th, 2021.

Will Carlos Alcaraz get the win? Will Juan Manuel Cerundolo end his campaign with an upset? Since Alcaraz has already qualified for the semifinals of the Next Gen ATP Finals, this match offers some respite for the Spaniard. And he will likely use it to fine-tune his game to even greater heights.

Carlos Alcaraz is living up to the billing as the Next Gen ATP Finals favorite. The Spaniard overcome his toughest test yet when he toppled Brandon Nakashima in straight sets in his second group stage match. Alcaraz dropped just four points behind his first serve in the entire match and pinched two tiebreak sets against the tenacious American whose stock is also rising rapidly. The match also featured quite possibly the point of the week. Alcaraz won a high octane rally with some jaw dropping reflexes in the middle of the second set, much to the delight of exuberant crowd. With his second win on the board, the 18-year-old is the first player this week to reach the semifinals. But before that he will look to maintain his 100% winning record when he takes on Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo lost his second group stage match and consequently eliminated from the semifinal picture at the 2021 Next Gen ATP Finals. The Argentine lefty did not go away without a fight as he halted Holger Rune’s charge. The Dane had established a commanding 2-0 sets lead before Cerundolo upped the ante in the third set. Having fashioned two breakpoints in the match, he took one of them to keep the match alive. But since this event is played with such peculiar scoring system, it is incredibly hard to come back once an opponent takes a lead. Rune would easily win the fourth set and eliminate Cerundolo.

Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Manuel Cerundolo have not played before at any level. It is quite surprising that these two have never crossed paths on the ATP Challenger Tour. But Thursday’s meeting has come at an inopportune time for Cerundolo. Without a single main draw on hard courts all year, the Argentine’s task doesn’t get any easier on Thursday. Given Alcaraz’s extraordinary talent and form, he is bound to keep his winning streak intact in this one.
