Marin Cilic is ranked 28 in the ATP world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 Paris Masters. The veteran Croatian is approaching the twilight of a very long and successful career, but is still capable of some very good tennis as evidenced by his win at the St. Petersberg Open last week. Cilic stunned the field by his run to the title, even proving his fitness with impressive three set wins over Roberto Bautista Agut and Taylor Fritz among his other scalps. He kept the momentum doing by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the First Round here, his sixth victory in a row on the ATP Tour. In this type of form and with his extensive experience he can be very dangerous on this quick surface, and will be a very difficult opponent for his young opponent Sebastian Korda.
Sebastian Korda is the world number 39 and like his opponent Marin Cilic is unseeded here at the 2021 Paris Masters. The American has established himself as one of the most promising young players in the world with a series of impressive performances over the past few seasons. However, his form has deserted him lately and he will be hoping for a strong performance here in Paris in order to finish the year on a high. His explosive game is well suited for this surface, and he started strongly here, stunning thirteenth seeded Aslan Karatsev in the First Round, This will have given him confidence heading into this match with Marin Cilic with the winner being granted a spot in the Round of 16 here in Paris.
This will be the second meeting between the two players with Sebastian Korda leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier in the year in Acapulco, with the American coming away with a comfortable straight sets win. I expect this match to be a lot closer than the first one, with Marin Cilic in much better form now than he was back then, I think that this one will go down to the wire, but I am backing Korda to get his second win over the veteran in as many matches. Cilic is bound to be feeling the effects of all those matches he has played recently, and I think that the American will be able to take advantage. It will certainly be a close and interesting match, but Korda will win here, advancing to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Paris Masters.
