Gael Monfils and Adrian Mannarino play off in an all-French battle in the Second Round of the 2021 Paris Masters. Both men are highly experienced and will be eager to perform well in front of their home crowd. Will Monfils continue his recent resurgence after a long run of poor form? Or will Mannarino cause the big upset and move on to the Round of 16?
Gael Monfils is the fifteenth seed here at the 2021 Paris Masters and is ranked number 22 in the world. The exciting Frenchman is one of the most popular players on the ATP Tour, and is a huge crowd favorite due to his flashy and dynamic game style. After a terrible past few seasons he is seemingly now back to his best, with some very impressive and consistent performances recently. The Frenchman won this tournament in 2016 and will have many fond memories here. He was pushed to the limit in the First Round by Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, dropping the first set before recovering to win the next two and the match. Monfils served extremely well during this contest, and if that continues he will have a very strong chance of winning against his next opponent Adrian Mannarino. He starts as the big favorite here but needs to be wary of his opponent who has a good record on this surface.
Adrian Mannarino is unseeded here at the 2021 Paris Masters and is ranked 59 on the ATP Tour. The left handed Frenchman has been in poor form lately but can be an extremely tricky opponent, especially on this surface. Mannarino had a surprising upset win over the in-form world number 21 Nikolosz Basilashvili in the First Round, The Georgian had been playing extremely well and was expected to advance, but Mannarino summoned every ounce of his experience in order to get the win. He will be up against it here against his countryman Gael Monfils, but he should never be discounted, especially on this quick surface and at home. The veteran starts as the underdog here and will have to be at his best to have any chance of the upset here in Paris.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two Frenchmen with Gael Monfils leading the head to head 3-2. Each time they play it is a close contest, and I expect no difference here. Adrian Mannarino has been struggling lately but he tends to save his best tennis for this surface and against top opponents. I think that it will be closer than their rankings and recent form suggests, but I am backing Gael Monfils to win here. He is enjoying his tennis and seems very confident, and he is one of the best players in the world in these conditions when he is feeling good. Mannarino will use all of his experience and guile to keep it close, but expect Monfils to win here, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Paris Masters.
